Online Video - Who is Watching?

Online Video - Who is Watching?

For a moment ponder how much online video you watch in a day. 5 minutes? A few hours?  I suppose it’s relevant to interests, and free time, however how frequently are we watching and who in fact is watching. The answers are pretty shocking, well moreover not what I expected which lead to generate an element of shock, and then to by nature sit and think on it for a moment.  First instinct is that children would lead the online viewers, you know through watching funny videos friend sent them, killing time before bed and even escaping homework.  To my chagrin, I found that only a small fraction of online videos are of that nature and targeted towards the younger demographic of middle school kids. This is where it gets interesting. 70% of adults watch online footage regularly. Regularly is considered to be daily. The number jumps nearly 90% for early adults of 18-25. In fact nearly twenty five million YouTubers’ have a college or post graduate degree. [i] And leading the way in the world with who is watching online video is as you may have guessed, China.  Currently (2012) in China they have approximately 527 million people constantly watching video on the internet. And by 2015 they estimate that number will grow to a whopping 712 million people. [ii] Below you’ll find a graph that shows the different methods and how frequently users in China are watching video online. Not only are the Chinese watching the most by population, but an astronomical amount in duration as well.

In fact watch the video below for a little of information how to make your video more successful so some of the millions of viewers in China can see your attempt to go viral, or in fact do the exact opposite as they tell you…

  1. I believe in the near future that cable companies will be out of service, and that everyone will stream there content from the internet to there "TV" which wont be a tv but a huge PC that preforms as a TV/computer. the amount of shows I watch online is vast and thats just me. I can do this through many sites because I do not have the channel on my TV. and instead of paying for pay per view fights you can stream them from a site right to your TV. I believe we are a short time until TV is on the web.

    1. I don't believe necessarily they will be out of service. Cable companies today have to much money invested in them to die out. Yes, they will have to adapt to rapidly growing online video market.

    2. Some TV shows and movies have started to include the viewers. They have done this by have them Tweet something and it will appear on the TV screen as the show is going on, people will follow what is being Tweeted as they enjoy watching the show. This makes watching the TV show interactive and more enjoyable for those consumers always wanting searching from something new and exciting.

    3. With the advent of companies such as NetFlix which ultimately saw the demise of Blockbuster Video, it's worrisome,(well to me anyways)that cable could follow suit. I agree with William though. I don't think cable will be nixed out by online video. The cable companies are highly profitable corporations with enough money to compete with any new advances or opportunities that online video brings.

    4. Very interesting thought! TVs themselves are continuously evolving and are often preferred by many people to watch. But I think it is possible that rather than using satellite and cable to access channels or videos TVs could start to use the internet.
However, don't forget there are some areas still where internet is not as accessible. I live in the country and am unable to get an internet signal so I have to use a rocket hub which is a lot more limited in GBs. Hopefully this changes in the future though!

  2. Well done. Online videos are now absolutely the NO.1 tool in social media in China as it has so many advantages such as accessible, free and fast. I can't say it could replace the whole function of TV but it is a good compliment and it works greatly.

  3. Very interesting facts. This definitely changes the way companies should be marketing. It seems as though people have less attention spans, so rather than giving information through writing a quick video is more engaging and effective for getting information across.

  4. It really is astonishing to think that when I was child television was the only avenue to watch videos. The way online videos have exploded on the past decade is incredible. Personally I don't watch spend much time watching online videos, but facts are facts and society is adapting to this trend.

  5. This is a surprising fact to me, since i did not know that online video had become so popular, and so vastly spread among the world. With the amount and statistics of certain ages watching video online for frequently, this could be a good way for marketers do get their message or target their consumers. I also agree with darcy that I in fact am also not much of an online video watcher, but seeing my siblings watch as much online videos as they do, it helps me to believe the facts are true.

  6. Great post and really suprising facts. This is a great opportunity for marketers to understand their target markets better. Marketers should study their TM very closely and adjust the way they present their informtion. Ie. if their TM watches more videos through their Smart phone then they must insure the videos are accessible by these devices.

  7. online videos are a great way to reach a target market. since so many people watch videos online, placing ads on videos that fit into your market can be awesome for a business in need of more recognition. the only problem is that if the ads are too invasive it can create an angry target market. awesome post with interesting facts.

  8. I did not realize how many people watch videos from their personal computers. This would make sense with the amount of videos available for free online. This would include YouTube, free video sites, and torrent sites.

  11. Great post Joel!I am surprised that Chinese have such a high percentage of online video viewers. How important is for businesses to research and be informed about technology trends in order to know how to advertise and to whom. One of the most difficult decisions for marketing companies is to choose their advertising vehicle. Certainly, for China video advertising would be the best option.

  12. Great post Joel. I know that I spend many hours online watching video, not only on websites such as Youtube, but websites from TV broadcasters catching up on my favourite TV shows. Its incredible to know that if I miss an episode of my favourite show, I can find it online and watch it that way. Technology is incredible.

  13. Wow, great post Joel, I had no idea that people in China were spending so much time watching online videos, 527 million people constantly watching was mind blowing to say the least. The stats about North America weren't really all that surprising too me, growing up in the Internet age I have known many people who spend a ridiculous amount of time watching videos, especially through high school, my question for you is, how much time a week do you spend watching videos online?

  14. I feel like this would be the blog post to put this link in: http://www.michaelgeist.ca/content/view/6710/125/ Canada limits lawsuits for piracy (in personal cases) to $5000, and apparently most settlements will be about $100. This limits the crazy lawsuits like in the usa where people were charged hundreds of thousands of dollars, which would ruin ones life, and were just to demolish people who pirated things.

In canada it will be enough to show you it's wrong, but wont ruin your life.

  15. Excellent post Joel. I found it very interesting how so many people in China were spending so much time on online videos. The 527 million was astounding. In terms of North America, I was aware that many people watch videos, I usually see at least one person in each of my classes watching a video. Due to the fact that online videos are popular worldwide, businesses can take this into consideration when thinking about expanding into an international market such as China.

  18. Great post, I wasn't surprised by the statistics, as people don't like to spend so much time viewing a video on their phone, First, because phones usually have small screens and a phone screen is usually very close to the eyes, therefore spending long hours destroys our vision and also because not all phones support the java system(eg: iphone, balckberry, etc.)
