The Future of Social Media

Social media has grown from a way to connect with your best friends to a commercial entity which allows regular people and businesses to build relationships, attract customers, and grow their product or service. We all understand the power that social media has today and the kind of prospects it has in the future, but what exactly can we expect in terms of personal and business oriented social media?

Social media and our Personal Brand:

Social media can help any individual build their own personal brand. They can portray an ideal image of themselves to others so as to grow their connections and value. Much like LinkedIn currently, social media in the future will allow us to connect with the people we know and build connections in our chosen profession. Employers will also be able to check our work experience, our references, and even what kind of person we are based on our social media profiles. On a more personal note, our social media applications will let us see exactly what friends think of a certain restaurant or what they recommend to order and, much like this proposed product from Google, will let us see these things on the fly with a type of augmented reality.

A way augmented reality may work in the future.

The Future of Social Media in Business:

Today, businesses can attract customers and increase sales with social media, but as it evolves, social media will help in a number of ways. Social media will be a great avenue for businesses to gain access to its customer’s activities and ideas. For example, businesses could further define their most frequent customers and target them over less frequent visitors. This increase in awareness of customer traits will also result in more personalized products and experiences. Also, because users can “check in” when they go somewhere just like in the Google video, the business will be able to see when a person enters their store and can send the customer information about sales or even directions to a specific product through their social media application. Essentially, the future of social media in business will allow companies to personalize the customer experience and gain further knowledge of its target markets.

An interesting video on social media

The future of social media is already happening today, such as the “check in” feature on Facebook, and these services will continue to evolve and change as time goes on. Eventually everything will be integrated and will let businesses and consumers expand their reach and gain access to other people’s opinions and thoughts on specific places or products. How do you think social media will change in the future?

  4. I think that social media in the workplace will become more acceptable when accessing them at work (ie. Facebook and LinkdIn). I beleive that employers are going to encourage employees to use the "check in" application to show other's their location.

    2. I agree that social media will be more acceptable in the workplace. However, there is a downside. Anyone can get access and as a result, they can just as easily create a fictitious cover. Meaning anyone can make themselves look like the "ideal" employee. Its easy to pretend to be someone that your not.

  8. There are a lot of benefits for consumers and companies using social media. However, there ware disadvantages as well. Because everything is being posted online people experience a lack of privacy. It would be beneficial that people are taught how to properly use social media. I would even suggest making it a part of the school curriculum considering it is such a big part of our lives now.

  9. Social media is a great way to meet customers where they are. There is such a large number of Canadians on Facebook. The total number of users on Facebook in Canada is 18, 600, 020. Canada is ranked at #13. The United States is in the #1 spot on the list totaling 168, 494, 580 users on Facebook.
For these reasons businesses should be on Facebook.

  11. Excellent post! I like to think of the quote that "its not are you using social media, its are you using it right". I feel that every business should be using social media of some sort to help either promote or inform their consumers. With almost everyone on the web, whether it be on their computer, tablet or mobile device, they are in constant contact with the internet. This gives them 24 hour access to your business and brand, which is a huge plus for your company and the consumer.

  13. Great Post!

Related to social media in the workplace. I see it as growing with businesses in the future. I would also assume that a lot of new policies, procedures and regulations would evolve as a result. It can be a benefit towards a company but can also prove as a means of heightened liability as well.

  15. Benefits derived from social media are increasing day by day, This is because social media users are increasing in a fast rate.
If a business wants to engage in social media and be visible to people, then it should use interesting and creative techniques that could give a positive image about the company, but if a company was seen as boring, The company will suffer.

  16. Interesting read, I defiantly agree that Social media is going to cause B2C sales to be much more of a personal experience, regarding your point on how potential employers can see your Facebook and use it as an extension of resume of sorts, I believe in the future this will be even more defined, with social media profiles being requested before employment can be secured in order to further understand the potential employee.
