Arthur Cobham- Reflection Post

My experience in Web Marketing this semester was overall, a positive one. Throughout the semester, I was able to reinforce a lot of knowledge I had already obtained in the past, but I was also able to learn a lot about several topics I would have otherwise never have known about. Topics such as the development of the Internet and how it evolved, and continues to evolve was a topic I found especially interesting.

Taking part in the flash mob assignment was also something I found rewarding. Not only did I get the chance to meet some great people,  I was able to further develop my understanding of viral marketing as well as promotion through social media. I also felt that the blended learning involved in this course met a good balance and overall, I feel like I would prefer it over the traditional method.

In closing, I enjoyed this class more than I thought I would and I hope to carry many of the learning experiences that I encountered throughout this semester into my professional career in the future. Special thanks to Christina who provided very clear, concise and interesting content this year. I wish everybody the very best in their future endeavours, thank-you and good luck on your exams!

Dan Thomas - Web Marketing Reflection Post

The marriage of Marketing and the Web have always been a passion of mine so I thoroughly enjoyed the the content covered in this course in particular out of all my courses this semester.

My take-aways from this are many, but most specifically, I learned to more effectively use social media as a tool to achieve objectives, rather than "Everyone is on Facebook, we MUST have a Facebook account."

I look forward to creating more content driven...stuff, and learned a great deal about the proper ways to go about database marketing, which is huge for me.

The book is a great read. It has been one of the most fun(?) textbooks I have ever read. The insights are incredible.

I disliked the flash mob most. It's a project with a large group and a large scope. Our group had several setbacks and, although I am happy with the marketing video we created, given those setbacks, this was my least enjoyed portion of the course.

I was in the hospital for a week this term and out of commission for about two, so the only thing I would have liked to spend more time on were the topics I missed that were covered in that time.

Overall, I really enjoyed the class. HOWEVER....I think having a blended format class with the only physical class being at 8 AM on a Friday morning is a recipe for bad attendance. This "blended" aspect of the class would be a close second to the Flash Mob video on my "dislike" list.

I wish you all the best as future Marketers!

Web Markting reflection

Web Marketing Reflection
This class has provided me a lot of information that allow me to improve my knowledge marketing. This course is totally different with the other class I took before but much beneficial.
I hoped I can use my knowledge that I studied to run my own business as well.  Learning about these different things through Flash Mob, I can understand how important of the web marketing now. I will need it in order to start the business. I am aware of how much time a people spend online.  One more thing I enjoyed the most to course was the class blog. I learned many things from here regarding key businesses topic. Moreover, this blog also helps me in exams as well.
Overall, I enjoyed my time at class and online, and I improved my knowledge. Thank you to Christina as well. She is a good professor. I wish everyone can do this test very well and can use everything which they learned in the future.
Happy holiday and good luck to everyone

Web Marketing Reflection

Web Marketing has been a knowledge expanding class. At the beginning of the semester I initially thought that nothing was to be learned, and that marketing over the internet was for the most part common sense. That certainly changed quickly. The deeper the class got into content the more complex it turned out to be.  This goes from the use of keywords to the various types of online sellers to the usage of online videos to what makes a website desirable to use or unusable and how ads are produced and paid for. All of the information learned changed my perspective when I am now surfing the internet. Now I look at websites in a different manor and quickly am able to diagnose their competency levels. This, as a marketer, is good to know in the future of how to make websites that have stickiness and that will be a pleasant experience for the consumer.
This class has led me to want to change, for the better, my employers’ website. I have always recognized its poor design, appeal and general lack of fluidity.  All its shortcomings has weakened our stores ability to successfully branch out, outside of our region. It would be unbelievable to do so given the niche clientele we possess. Given the ability to track specific metrics and how to alter keywords to generally bring our store atop the organic searching list is the first thing I plan to undertake. Then the plan is to improve the ways to get our product showcases to create more online sales for the store. And lastly to improve our social media uses to get more store traffic and get the word out there which we have failed to do seemingly. And after taking the course, this has become all the more apparent and am now willing to take on this challenge for our store.
When it comes to the assignments, and projects I have some mixed feelings.  I really enjoyed producing and being a apart of the flash mob once, I finally have a group that was willing to take on the task. It was a great experience. My only concern was that in the grand scheme there was a lot of planning and legwork to be done for a mere fifteen percent. I also felt the brand evaluation was fairly extensive, but I recognize that is my own problem for not completing each task as they came. Otherwise everything was very understandable and well proportioned. I really liked the fact that the marks were widely spread out.

What amazing course is Web Marketing! I have learnt many things through this course.
At the beginning I didn’t understand what Web Marketing is about, but day after day I came to realize that we need it in order to enter the business field. I personally took this course on the right time, because it was even hard for me to understand different terms used in this industry. Now I can follow some instructions provided online and create something when necessary.
I enjoyed reading some chapters of the book which I found very helpful in the future and I could discover the technics that many companies are using to attract more customers to their websites.
The lectures were given in such manner that I could easily get what I didn’t from my reading, but I will have to practice how to create a web once I need it. This is a good start any ways! The importance for me is that I can now follow any tutoring session in that area and run an online business if I think of it. This course needs more focus than any other courses, considering its importance in today’s business. I wish I had somebody to help me to use every think I learnt in this course.
I appreciate our Instructor who used different methods to help us to understand what’s going on with new technologies. This will help us to embrace the business carrier.
Thanks to everyone I met in this class, happy break!!!
Web marketing is exciting and informative course, I think it is very important for marketing students  to have this kind of courses, form my own view  I think its relevant to the international marketing  system.
In the future web marketing will be the most important channel to deliver goods and services in fact its is but; with development happing in the field I expect it’s going to be the most Important channel for both buyers and suppliers especially internationally.
I think I need more time on learning web design and how to great a useful websites that will be effective to attract customer and get the more engage in the website.\
Somehow the blended learning format is helpful in my case because the materials always there and I can review it several times.

After I completed this course I found different aspects that I liked such as the flash mob which was very interesting. Also, the new media that I learned is Google Docs and that helped me understand how to create different documents and this helped me to do my work at home without having to attend face to face meetings.
I learnt different ways and tactics on how to use Internet to market and sell my products and services in the future; Working on the brand evaluation assignment improved my skills in evaluating brands, which would help me do that in the future.
I liked the flash mob project as I had an interesting experience when planning for it and filming it, although it was a tough and time consuming project, but I’m greatly satisfied with the ending results.
I wanted to spend more time on the brand evaluation assignment, as I thought that a large assignment like this would have needed more time to spend on.

Reflection

Web marketing wasn't at all what I initially expected it to be. Although, I can say confidently that I have more insight and knowledge about how marketing is conducted via the internet. Social media is a large component for marketing products and services, and in the last few years it has increased awareness for those who use this medium. It has taught me to look at ads on social media a lot more carefully and has changed my perception.

Due to the brand evaluation assignment I learned that it is crucial for companies in the 21st century to market and advertise their products and services online. Many individuals spend the majority of their time on the internet rather than reading newspapers or magazines. Although, I learned that many companies haven't utilized social media to increase their brand awarness. The company I did my brand evaluation was on Petsmart and it is one of those companines that can benefit through more online marketing.

Finally, the flash mob. I have to say it sounds easier and more fun than it actually was. Aside from the creative component it required a lot of hard work and coordination to get the groups and individuals outside the group to participate. However, the end result is what made the experience worth while.

I hope everyone had a great semester, good luck in the future :)

Web Marketing - Reflection on Class

When I started taking this class in September I thought, woo easy A.. I thought I knew everything about the Internet, I do use it everyday.. haha. Then the class actually began..
A lot of what i learned will be transferred to any business setting workplace i next end up in. I enjoyed learning about SEO and how it works and functions. I learned how it is quite hard to advertise your company online since there is so much advertising going on on every webpage.
I wish we could have spent more time learning about the different types of online ads and even the graphic design part behind it. It would be cool actually designing an ad and seeing how effective it is (and how difficult). So much thought goes into Web Marketing and before taking this class I did not realize that.
Class was most often engaging doing group work and online activities. Also I found it very helpful having the slides posted on eLearn to refer to again after class.

This course has taught me a great deal of new and important information that will be useful for my future marketing career. It inspired me to stay up to date with new content and programs on the web, and stay connected with this type of communication. With marketing mainly focusing on reaching your company or brands message to consumers, the internet is now one of this generation’s most popular form of communication. This is important for any marketer to understand, so that they can better or further their knowledge with the web. This is another main reason I was inspired to learn about the content being taught in this course.

I believe one of the main focuses of content that I learned during this course, that I will further the use of in my future career would be social media. With social media booming with the current generation, it is something that all marketers should be using to promote their company. It is one of the only ways for companies to gain 24 hour access to their consumers, therefore being a major strength for any company. Another part of the course I found very informative and interesting, was the flash mob assignment. It was a great change for myself and classmates to work as a team, and to share creative ideas to make up one final project.

I would have liked to spend more time on search marketing and metrics. I found those topics in class very interesting, but did not gain enough knowledge from in class lectures. Although the text book was a very good source of information to continue my learning of this subject after the lectures given that day.

The new form of blended learning was a new experience for me. It is not something that I enjoy or would choose to do again. For me to fully be knowledgeable or intake the best information, is through in class lectures. I can better understand information from hearing the teacher speak and also by writing down the information. This helps me to retain information better as well. For future classes I would rather steer away from the style of blended learning.

My experience in this course was positive. I learned a lot of new things about marketing on the web. This is very useful because marketing on the Internet has become a crucial part of doing business and communicating with consumers.  I was very interested when I learned that there are so many social media tools that I have never even heard of before. I would have normally assumed that a presence on Facebook and Twitter was the right way to use social media no matter what. In the future, when trying to connect with a specific target market through social media I will be more inclined to look at different options other than Facebook and Twitter to see what sites the target market is using.
I really enjoyed the flash mob project. It was a really great experience. I want to be involved in event planning as a career, and this project allowed me to get experience in planning something I’ve never planned before. I will definitely include this project in my portfolio. There is not much I would improve in this class. However, I found components of the brand evaluation to be unnecessarily tedious. For example, having to find out what page the brand showed up on in search engines when typing in specific key words. This was very time consuming because sometimes the brand wouldn’t show up until page 52. Overall, this project helped me to understand how poor online marketing can be a serious detriment to the brand’s image.

Since taking Web Marketing, my knowledge on the subject has expanded past that of what we learn on the consumer side. I've learned about all the thought processes and planning that is crucial when hosting a webpage for your company - and how essential it is - through the brand evaluation assignment. SEO was by-far the most interesting subject for myself, as its something I've always wondered about before taking the class.

I wish we would of had more time to study and work on the flash mob project. It's biggest challenge was trying to coordinate with only a few people and somehow creating an effective flash  mob with no experience or resources. The overall project, however, was an interesting change in our curriculum here at Mohawk.

Overall, the class was very interesting. It's helped me develop the skill needed to work with brands online, as well as through blogging, which is also an important skill in web marketing. My one wish for this course would have been to spend more time on SEO, as well as social media and how we can use it more effectively for managing a companies brand. Lastly, dividing the class time into separate classes would have helped a lot, as taking in everything once a week in a single two hour class can be difficult to learn from. Regardless, I enjoyed the class and I look forward to seeing everybody after the holidays!

Reflection Post

When I first saw that we were studying Web Marketing, I was trying to  figure out what there is to learn about this topic. I thought that there wasn't going to be enough information to learn and thought the class content would be dry and boring.  When the class started I realized that there is a lot to learn when it comes to marketing on the world wide web.

When I first thought of marketing on the web I began to think of what avenues companies can take. There were annoying pop-up ads, social media and sponsored search ads. After a few weeks I quickly realized that there were a lot more avenues businesses can take. There are so many options for us as marketers to consider when we are ready to market our products and/or services via the web, and I am happy that I have learned these options over the course of the semester.

As a students, we are all aware of how much time we spend online and I believe we have become so used to seeing online marketing campaigns on the web that we don't even realize what they are. I know that for myself, I don't even realize that when I see ads online, whether it be on my favourite websites or social media networks. These marketing campaigns surround us every time we use the internet and there is no escaping them.

Learning about these different options we can take when we develop marketing campaigns in the future will be very beneficial and I am happy to know that I know about these options. I enjoyed learning about different 'behind-the-scenes' aspects of web marketing(SEO, analytics, etc.) and I enjoyed completing the flash mob. Although the flash mob was hard to get ready and plan, I think we executed the flash mob very well and I am excited to see how many hits we receive on YouTube.

Our brand evaluation project(s) showed me what brands can do right and what they may be doing wrong. Although it was time consuming it was very interesting to learn about what a brand does, and what they can do better. It was fun to uncover these details that most consumers overlook.

Overall, I enjoyed my time in this class and I am happy that I learned what I did. I am happy to know that I am leaving this course with knowledge I did not have when I entered the course. I wish everyone good luck in the future!

Happy holidays!

Since starting web marketing I can say it has been an enjoyable course from the beginning. To be completly honest going into this coruse I thought it was going to be a waste of time, growing up around the internet I thought I already had a firm enough grasp on the topic and that anything learned would just be things i had seen before.

However I can say since starting the course I've learned a great deal about the more in depth elements of the web and how advertising works on it, I particularly enjoyed learning about  social media advertising, as this form of advertising is sure to be a huge market in the future.

In terms of a review of the functionality of the how the class room was ran I can say  that it was good overall, using the traditional slideshow explanation style of teaching is in my opinion one of the best ways of getting messages across as it ads a visual element to the experience, I enjoyed the numerous informative videos that were displayed throughout the term as well.

In conclusion I can say that taking the web marketing class has been enjoyable overall with many interesting topics covered. And I look forward to continuing this style of learning in Market Research.

Sincerely, Matt

Web Marketing Reflection

Going into Web Marketing at the beginning of the year I didn't really know what to expect.  I wasn't to sure what the course would entail and cover throughout the semester, but I am glad that I did take this course.  Over the semester I really started to understand some of the important aspects of what makes up a website, website coding, the all round aspects of the social media market. All though I did know some of the material that was covered there were some things that I did not know, and I glad that I now have some knowledge of the topic.  For example:

The actual definitions and understanding of the difference between SMS and MMS is something that I hold in high regard considering I have been using it for years but never fully understood the difference between the 2.

One thing that I was not to keen about this semester was the flash mob major project. I never really understood how this is going to help me in the business world, and I didn't really take anything away from it.  I did enjoy the making of the video and working closely with some of the students in our class, but as for taken something out of it that I can put to relevant use in the business world, I am at a loss.

At the end of the year you discussed thew creation of mobile APP's, this I thought was the most interesting thing that you covered all semester.  I was always interested in how App's were created and I really wish that this could have been our major project, or maybe even the creation of our own website.  With those 2 ideas I really see what I would have taken out of it, and those 2 ideas are huge aspects in the business world and I feel that knowing how to create those 2 items would be very beneficial to business students at Mohawk College.

So in conclusion, I did take away vital information such as what makes a successful website, APP and how to market to the online community and I can put this to good use in furthering my education here in the business program at Mohawk.  I do ask that for future students coming through the program, and that we think about changing up the major assignment for them.

I would like to thank you for your dedication and patience with our class and thank you for brightening our minds and getting us ready for the future.

Dan Ross
I found that everything in this course was just putting definitions to things I already knew how to do. Although I was already familiar with these concepts it was helpful to go a little more in depth. I feel that web marketing is an essential thing to be familiar with for the present and future of business. Since our generation was raised on the computer and evolving technology a lot of this was already in common practice.

SOME SUGGESTIONS

I felt that some projects that involved a lot more work were worth a small percentage where as items that required less work were highly valued. For example the brand evaluation that was worth 10% and required you to discuss 10 items throughout the semester or a flash mob that requires practice, filming, editing, report and presentation was worth 15% versus making some comments on a blog for 10%. I felt that the larger projects should have been worth way more for the work.

Since our generation is so tech savvy and the generations to come are only going to be more advanced you should try to incorporate more interactive activities as it is difficult to sit for 2 hours listening to something you already know about.

All in all I took away some useful information and had a successful year! See you in market research!

Lindsay Petanowitch
I thought this course was very interesting. I did not realize all of the thought that goes behind making websites and updating them. I can use my experience from this course to better myself for my future career. I feel that I will be able to help my future employers create their websites and help.

I liked doing group activities and being interactive with the class. I did not like doing the quizzes online. The quizzes had a lot of material that I felt we did not cover over the course. The quizzes were very short in time and had many hard questions. I wish we had done more activities because it would have helped me to learn about the course more.

Overall, I enjoyed the course.

Reflection Post!

I have really enjoyed the web marketing course. I really enjoyed the hands on aspect of the course. The blog posts and brand evaluation offered a lot of content and made it interesting to follow.
I had a lot of fun with the Flash Mob video project. It was a lot of fun coming up with our idea, planning and executing it. Although it was freezing outside for our flash mob video, it was very worth it and was easily my favourite day this year.

Aside from the flash mob video, I found the blog posting a very neat idea. Being able to read about my peers takes on different topics and how they felt about it. It also came from a fellow student so I was able to relate easily.
Commenting on each blog was a good idea, it got me to read about the topic and read through other peoples comments made about the topic.

In class, my favourite part was the hands on portion. When we were tasked to find an email that did not meet the suggested content or when we had to find a QR campaign. It gave many good examples of what was right and what was wrong.

I learnt a lot about how the SEO and SEM worked. I did not know how the Google search found each result and which ones made the top.

With what I have learnt here, In the future, I will be able to create a strong online brand, know how to bring customers to my site, and the best ways to find new potential consumers!

Thank you very much for the excellent class!

Austin :)

Reflection post

I don't really care much for blended classes and mainly online content. This is especially difficult when there is a textbook to buy which is quite expensive, and it is for a subject that isn't overly important or necessary. I can reflect that I didn't quite learn any new skills throughout this class. Many of the large assignments were undervalued, and the small assignments overvalued. There should have been one culminating final project and student study throughout the year.

I was unable to do the first assignment in class due to the fact that there were a limited number of topics, each by week. When the list was handed around the class to SEE the topics, people had signed up, and the list was full by the end of the class, and I was left to do the first topic. I was unable to do this topic within the time frame as I did not have a computer or internet access, and had just started training shifts at work. When students who didn't come to the first class came to the second, they were given late dates, new topics, and more leeway than someone who was in class the first day. In the end, I found this class to be a filler class, not teaching anything to the younger, more tech savvy generations.

This course has provided me with the necessary teaching and information that has allowed me to develop my understanding of strategically marketing on the web. This course unique and different compared to the other courses I have taken at Mohawk. The level of interaction required for this course was much different but beneficial at the same time. Through the interaction, blog posts, and comments on this class blog, I managed to learn something new every time I logged on.

I hope to one day own my own company and have a website page for it. I will definitely use the knowledge I have acquired in regards to building your website rank on search engines, the design elements to a successful website, and the importance of customer service on the web.The aspect of the course I enjoyed the most in regards to course content and learning experiences was the class blog because it allowed me to learn a variety of new things regarding key businesses topics and fundamentals. The part I disliked the most was the flash mob video assignment. I did not really learn anything from the experience, and furthermore I found it very hard to meet with my group on a daily basis due to the fact I work roughly 60 hours a week and have two children. The participation marks and how they were weighted was a little to the extreme in my mind, maybe if I did not have any other priorities in my life I wouldn’t of had an issue but unfortunately that is not the case. I would of liked to spend more time on social media as I believe it is a vital tool for marketing and prospecting leads on the web.

Overall I am walking away with extending my knowledge of marketing on the web, which I plan on using in future business endeavors. I would liek to thank you for this new learning experience, and i will definately be using what I have learned for future business purposes.

Thank you and have a good christmas.

Reflection Post

Going into this semester, I never really knew the power that is within marketing via the web. With so much versatility and how fast it is growing, the world wide web continues to grow and marketers are continuing to adapt to this. Whether its social media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn, to search ads and viral campaigns, I have learned the many ways to market to consumers online. I've also gained a grasp on the history of the internet and how it has developed so much in the last 10 to 15 years. Insane. I found learning something new about an unexplored way of marketing has become very valuable to my future.
Being a student and utilizing the internet and computer use for both school and personal life, I never quite realized the presence of marketing campaigns online. Now that I have taken this class, each time I see an ad I begin to wonder about that company and how their online marketing strategy is working. Must be doing well if I noticed!
There are a few things I take from the course that I did enjoy, and some I didn’t as much. The flash mob project was a great experience, but at times difficult to progress on. Getting a group of people of that size together on numerous occasions was very difficult. On the other hand, the final product was up to our standards and also a great time. The brand evaluation showed me the ins and outs of how a brand can establish themselves and continue to attain new consumers on the web, something I feel will be very useful in the future.
Overall, I enjoyed my time in this class and I have gained a lot of knowledge. It helps to have a good professor such as Christina as well. I wish everyone in this class all the best in their future endeavours, and hope to see you all in January.

Reflection

In this course I have learned various methods and thoughts that go into web marketing. I enjoyed browsing the multi social media sites and using them for promoting the flash mob. In my old job, at Billabong, I was one of the Twitter account managers and was in-charge of tweets, followers  and organizing; I wish I had known some of the things we learned throughout the course prior to my work so I could have use them to improve appealing to customers. I hope to take what i've learned into my new field at World Vision to provide interaction, immediate and involving as well, of course, as information driven.
I enjoyed the different aspect of the Internet we used to communicate during the course and the flash mob. It is unfortunate others weren't able to comprehend the functions which sometimes made collaborating difficult, but was useful when enabled. Christine was very helpful and was able to present the information in an engaging way by class discussions and this blog.
If it were a perfect world and we could change anything, I would have done the flash mob in smaller groups
or individual; I am, as are many other students, very busy which makes it difficult, and rely on others when completing a project. I feel the Google+ would have been ideal to use if other members were able to, otherwise it is stressful trying to teach others how to use tools to do the project.
Thank you to Christina DeVries for the time and effort that was put into each class in preparing us for the business world online.

Reflection post

I came in to this course with a bit of experience in web marketing, and was quite eager to learn more as I believe that web marketing is an extremely important part of marketing, and will only grow from here.
I found this course very interesting and every class I learned something new.
I was inspired by how complex and deep web marketing is, and how much there is to it.  There are so many intricacies, and so many elements to it.  I thought I already knew quite a bit, but I was barely scratching the surface.  Learning so many new things got me even more interested in web marketing, and I only want to learn more.
I was also inspired by how much there was to every individual element of web marketing.  Whether it is SEO and SEM and all their intricacies, or the elements of a landing page, there is always so much to learn and apply.
I found the history of web marketing and the internet pretty cool as well, as that's something I didn't know much about, and wouldn't have taken the time to learn it without this course.
My favourite part of the course was the flash mob.  It was so awesome getting a bunch of people together, and getting out in public to execute our mob.  Also, putting all of our videos together to be edited and watching the final product was really awesome.  It was cool to see all of our hard work come together and make a cool ad for Mucho Burrito.
My least favourite part was the 8am start time, but making it to class was always worth it.
I wish we would have spent more time SEO, but I realize that it is such a complex and confusing subject.  It's always changing, and there could be more than a few courses to just get the basics down.
I look forward to applying what I've learned in my next coop where I will continue as the junior web marketer.  I also am excited to apply everything to my personal online endeavors, which I am always trying.
This course really helped me advance my knowledge of web marketing, and I am very happy I got the chance to take it.  It was a great class.  I believe that it would be offered in first semester of marketing, as it was a very important aspect to many of the co-op positions.  Had I not had some experience of my own to do with online marketing I would never have gotten my position at my co-op.
Anyway, once again this was an awesome course, I just with it wasn't at 8am, and was offered in the first semester.
