Who is Online (Canada)?

Who is Online? (Canada)

With an average internet usage almost double that of the global average ?, It would be ludicrous to say any one specific group of people in Canada use the internet, whether that be based on their job, ethnicity or age group, simply put every kind of person today uses the internet to some varying degree. Individuals under the age of 45 had the highest rate of use, at 94%, while 80% of those aged 45 to 64 used the Internet. Among seniors, about one-half (51%) of those aged 65 to 74 used the Internet, compared with 27% of those aged 75 years and older [1]. Many marketers and celebrities are online as well whether they be advertising on Facebook or Youtube, In recent years many politicians have come to use the internet as a means to spread their message and advertise their campaigns.

What are Canadians doing online?

Canadians use the internet for a number of purposes, such as banking, many people find online banking as  being a lot easier than having to go to the bank and deal with the bank clerks and regulations that the bank may have, however many Canadians are still nervous about doing their banking online. Reading the news, online news continues to gain popularity as most news websites post all of the content that would be in the newspaper online for people to see, this saves Canadians money, and also helps eliminate waste, going on government websites, or searching for health and medical information. Social Media is one of the most popular online activities taken up by Canadians, websites such as Facebook and Twitter allow people to socialize with friends all from the comfort of their own computer and in 2010  CBC reported a 13 percent increase in social media website traffic[2].

  2. Matt you are right about how canadians use the internet. I my self use online banking and through my mobile device as well. I also have the Hamilton spectator app on my phone. both of these things help get through the day and keep me up to date with what is going on in my community. I think its the Canadian way, we are a society of people who enjoy things for what they can do for us, and not what they say about us.

  3. First off, well done on your blog, I enjoyed reading it. Second, you are quite right about how Canadians are using the internet and how often as well. Nowadays we really relay on it for alot of are day to day needs, whether it be to do banking, or checking the weather, we are constantly on the web

  4. Great post. I just read a report from CEO of facebook, talking about how important it is to collect database to classify our potential consumers. For web marketing, it is the unique and the most valuable source we have in hand and we need to take advantage of it.

  5. The convenience of online banking is very appealing to most Canadians but they are at risk of hackers getting their personal information. I have talked to a bank teller from CIBC that says theft through internet banking occurs more often than you would think. Maybe the sites should be made more secure considering this is a very serious issue.

    1. I agree with what you are saying about making the online banking more secure. I believe that as the internet grows and more and more people start to do their banking online (the younger generation)then there will be more complications and more hackers. The issues will need to be taken care of now. I think I need to keep a closer eye on my bank account.

    2. To be honest I have been doing my banking online for about 8 years now. I know that is not that long, but consumers need to be made aware of the risks regarding online banking. I was not told about this when signing up at the age of 18.

  6. I am very suprised to read that 51% of people ages 65-74 are still using the internet. Do you suppose that if businesses made their websites more easily acessible and easy-to-use that this number would increase?

    1. Very surprising indeed. As our population demographics ages and our technology advances, I would predict that number would go up. There will come a day when more than 90% of the Canadian population unseeing the internet.

  7. convenience is a huge deal when considering why people use the internet. its much easier to check the news on the internet or on your phone than it is to go and pick up a paper. the amount of people online provides a huge market for whatever kind of business you want to go into. but, like the case of newspapers, it may be causing a decline in some businesses. good job, it was a good read.

  8. As the news continues to gain popularity online, the main viewers that consist of the baby boomer generation are not moving over to the modern way of delivering newspaper. This is not necessarily a bad thing, especially because the News papers are not making nearly the profit from online sales as they are traditional delivery to homes.
As the younger more tech savvy generation grow and mature the internet may have to be the new major destination for newspaper company's in about twenty years from now.

  9. I wasn't aware that Canadians used the internet that much! But thinking about it, I can see it. I will go on the internet several times a day and for hours at a time. I will use my phone, tablet, or laptop and can pretty much get access to the internet from anywhere!
I agree with what some people have said about convenience, I know that when I am looking for the answer to a question, or looking to find anything out, I can just key it into Google and get an answer in seconds

  12. I did not know that Canadians use the internet at double the rate of the world wide average! It's an interesting fact.
It's also amazing the amount of progression the internet has made, incorporating itself into our daily lives and functions. It is a primary necessity for a lot of people. It's crazy to think about how the internet will change or weave its way into future generations of Canadians.

  15. That statistics that were presented were just where I would have assumed given our technological aptitude. However the statistic regarding just over 50% of seniors (65-74) are online shocked me. From personal experience they can barely operate a television let alone the complexities of the internet. But hats off to them. Good to see that much like Canada they are adapting to the times.
