Mobile Marketing Channels

Mobile Marketing is define as any marketing performed on or to mobile devices. It has many different forms and channels that can be used to advertise to all kinds of people well all people that own mobile devices. Phones and other mobile devices have become a large part of who we are we have them with us all the time mine is sitting next to me well I write this.

Like most forms of marketing, mobile marketing was met with a negative opinion of it's target audience, but how could marketers pass up the idea of marketing to us with one of our more beloved possessions.

Mobile Marketing in it's many forms

SMS
Short Message Service
My god these were irritating. It's a short message sent to your mobile device it only takes a few minutes to read and if your like me you text them to stop sending directly after you read it. The messages are sent out to the cell phone numbers that the advertiser has purchased similar to an auto dialler used by telemarketers but a little less irritating.

MMS
Multimedia Message Service
Kind of similar to SMS but with a few major differences. MMS is not limited to text messages they are mostly audio, video and images Example: Flash mobs. They encourage that you share the marketed ad with others and make, add, and share your own content. MMS is one of the better channels I can name it encourages creativity and they are the most entertaining ad campaigns I can think of.

Push Notifications
More modern version of SMS key difference it can be turned off greatest feature ever. They are like texts received on your phone but somewhat different in that they aren't texts just messages that appear on your phone. One problem they do pose is that they can interrupt your current activities on your device. But that brings me back to my first point you can turn them off that's just awesome.

QR Codes
Quick Response codes
QR codes are like a bar code that your phone scans. Now we are all business students and I'm pretty sure your aware of this video but if your not or you want to watch it again here it is. You can't tell me you don't want to shop this way.

There's a few more channels I didn't mention because lets face it's crunch time and I got my required word count. If you are interest in more I suggest you look them up on Wikipedia or another information source.

  1. Great post! With phones practically being in the hands of everyone in today's generation, phones are a key way of marketing to consumers. Although their are a lot of businesses that do not use this as a form of marketing, like you said because it can be annoying to receive these to your phone.

  2. Great job Chase Cornell. Mobile marketing makes it easy for the marketers to market their products to the consumers, but sometimes it can irritate a consumer as you mentioned in the post, as most of consumers do not use their cell phones for these kind of services, they use it for their personal use . Thus this type marketing is least used by a lot of companies, because it can impact the companies negatively.

  3. Good post, these days most people use smart phone and it is a good idea to advertise the product through mobile. However, as you mentioned above it is irritating for some customers and also most companies don't use this kind of marketing.

Indeed, mobile marketing companies are getting larger by innovating new programs of shopping and advertising, as it is expected by BIA/Kelsey’s the revenue will reach 1.47 billion by 2016. Still remain as a fraction of desktop but overall it has the most explosive growth of social advertising and marketing.

  5. It's true, consumers can get annoyed of constant mobile advertisments being sent to their mobile device. However, if the company has done their research on who demands their product, and who has already purchased from them. They can drastically cut down on irritating the people the advertisment was sent out too.

  6. Great post!
I always try to scan the QR codes as often as I can to see how different brands bring people to their websites or product info pages. Pretty much everyone has a phone nowadays so it's definitely a step in the right direction for marketers! Although constant messages can be annoying, getting your message out there is what counts.

  7. Awesome video post to add to your blog! Virtual grocery shopping is such an interesting concept, but hard to grasp in for Canadians. Their market is much different than ours. Like the video said, Koreans are the second hardest working people in the world which is a huge characteristic that the marketers took advantage of.
Great post, intereting facts, and easy to follow! Awesome job

  9. Good information here Chase.
I totally agree with you with the SMS, it is very annoying and can turn potential consumers away from the product or service being advertized.
On the other hand I totally understand why businesses do this because 9/10 times the person will read that text and be curious to figure out more about it.

Also, I enjoyed you last sentenced there. I got a good laugh out of that.

Overall great post and very informative.

  12. The primary issues regarding trends and progress for mobile marketing are:

The performance of mobile marketing strategy in use and the effect on the consumer mind-set and habits; the execution of a mobile marketing strategy, associated with the whole marketing mix – off-line and online, because it has been proven that different marketing objectives cannot be obtained without integrated approach. a powerful investment in marketing research regarding innovative ways of using the new coming cellular technologies

  13. I thought that video was very interesting and innovative. The idea is amazing and focused towards consumers using their smart phones to do everything.
Mobile marketing can include so many things. I would add many other styles of marketing that can be part of mobile marketing channels. these would include phone calls, emails, or Facebook. Who does not have Facebook or Twitter connected to their cell phone. Who now a days does not have the internet and data hooked up to their cell phone.

  14. There are companies that integrate these different types of communication. I found this and the idea of these different types of communication through mobile devices from Trumpia. This company works marketing mobile services.

  15. I think that SMS advertisements would be least effective. In my experience I also find them annoying and I always request to have them no longer sent to me. Also, they do not always appear to be secure. A lot of times I am unsure if they are spam or an advertisement so I do not pay attention to them.

  16. Wonderful Post! In my eyes the first several channels have already taken the advantage and lead in distribution channels. To better compete in the short future, other channels would be exploitted and developed to serve consumer variously.

  17. Marketing channels are very useful and i look for them to be even more useful in the future. Many advantages it carries is easy navigation which every individual wants now a days. As they say now a days people are more lazy so easy navigation through your mobile like sms is always key.

  18. Almost every physical ad had a bar code that you can scan. It's extremely beneficial to marketers as it allows the consumer to connect and gather more information on the product right away,
    promoting further interest.
    Great post!

  19. The day I receive SMS advertisements is the day I freak out and throw my phone into a lake. This could reach unimaginably annoying proportions, if businesses began sending DM to SMS. I feel this will be outlawed very quickly, and also will be very easy to block. If not I am sure it would just lead to lots of hate towards businesses that use it.

  20. I believe I speak for everyone who commented on this matter, that SMS advertisements are found annoying and no effective. Companies have to understand that there customers do not appreciate these advertisements and could possibly lose brand image.

  21. Just today, i received a text message from Rogers telling me that $35 dollars had been added to my Rogers account for long distance charges.. i had no idea if this was true or just spam! i called my dad and he advised he added long distance to my phone, but these thing occur very often.. it was a good way to attract people to buy ringtones and such but now with technology, people are rarely paying to download ringtones and they just ignore/delete the text because they think it is spam or going to bring a virus to their phone. Jamster.. i swear they text me every month telling me about the new cool songs they made ringtones out of...
annoying, but i am getting the message.

  22. I agree with Darcy's point about sms advertisements being non effective and just annoying people. Generally, people don' want to open their new text message to see a company such as Rogers aggressively attempting to sell. Personally, I don't pay attention to any kind of sms advertisements, if it's not a number I know, I delete it right away.

  23. SMS can be used for two-way incoming and confident devices between a product and a customer. It is an authorization based route, so a customer must control when they want to stop and start listening to from the product. However, it can be used in incredibly fun ways! Some of the best uses of SMS happen at major activities like conventions, sports and events. I’ve proved helpful on awesome text-to screen, written text voting, written text surveys, written text trivia, and written text a question strategies as well as regular confident written text signals strategies providing discounts, play of the game, ranking up-dates, etc.

  28. this topic seems awfully fresh in my head. It took my until today, and now I have read twice what SSM and MMS stood for. Very informative. It is astounding how many individuals have smart phones, so in turn how many marketers have to adjust and adapt as it is such a new way to provide marketing to people on a 24/7 basis with phones being by our side at all times.
