Mobile Marketing: What Does the Future Hold?

The world is going mobile. Time spent on the mobile device (for texts, music, gaming, and applications use) has more than doubled within the last 2 years (Forbes, 2012). With over 75% of the world's population using some sort of mobile device daily, the business world is capitalizing on marketing to this large target population. Mobile Marketing involves communication from business to consumer by way of mobile device sending either advertisements, sales promotions or general marketing messages to get the consumer to enter their store or visit their website (Quirk, 2012). There are many different ways to advertise to consumers via mobile device such as Short Message Service (SMS), Media Message Service (MMS), or on mobile internet browsers and specific applications. So with all that, what does the future hold?

Think of the future more like the mobile phone becoming the mini-laptop. Anything you can do on your computer, you will be able to do on your phone. This opens many doors for marketers to penetrate their respective markets very effectively. Online shopping is one of the major additions to the mobile world because not only does it directly generate sales, but brings opportunity for businesses to advertise. Following sales, businesses could have the ability to SMS text or email their consumer if the right information is attained at the point of sale. Some businesses are already conversing with their consumers in this manner (ie. Online stores send post-purchase messages). Companies will also be able to provide discounts to their mobile consumers. Another rising application that marketers have and will continue to take advantage of is "Scan". Scan is an app which generates information on a product with a single barcode scan. This application is very versatile which makes it useful for many marketers in different markets, as long as there is a code to be 'scanned'. For example, a shopper can go into a retail store, scan the barcode of an item with their mobile device, and the app will provide all information of that item (size, price, materials used, etc.).

Mobile shopping is just one of the many things the future could hold for Mobile Marketing. With most mobile devices coming with a GPS system upon purchasing, what if businesses can advertise to consumers based on their location? What if this is already happening? What if consumers could make their order while waiting in line by placing an order through a voice activated mobile application? (Mashable, 2012). Companies can also be rated by consumers on their mobile device. Does this mean that consumers will be making their final choice before they arrive at their shopping destination? Only time will tell what the future holds. One thing is for certain; there is plenty of opportunity for marketers to gain and retain new consumers.

  1. Cell phones has made purchasing products a lot more convenient for consumers. I have also used my cell phone to buy things online. This is a major advantage for B2C companies.

  2. Very well done! I agree with you on the fact that mobile devices are definitely becoming a huge marketing device. With a cell phone in the hands of most of the population, this gives marketers a very large window of opportunity to reach out to their consumers. Especially like Kaila said with purchasing products, I myself do a lot of online purchases through my phone rather than my computer.

  3. Awesome job!
Totally agree with you, I can't think of a time I don't have my phone on me besides when I play soccer.
I often buy movie tickets, which is linked with my SCENE card and debit card, and can use my phone at a printer there to avoid lines. Cineplex (SCENE) has almost made it easier to buy on the go rather then buy there, as you don't have to wait in any lines when you are there!

  4. Great post Mr. Robertson. I enjoyed the point you made about mobile phones becoming a marketing device. I know that I myself purchase products through my mobile phone, which makes purchasing an item faster and easier.

  7. As of right now smart phones offer a wide range of free applications for consumers. Most of these applications include a free version which are targeting younger audiences, teens and pre teens. These free apps come along with annoying pop-up ads and links to websites. Other ads make consumers watch commercial videos on their phones to collect points or fake money which then in turn allow the consumer to further advance in the game.

This really annoys consumers and they automatically try to exit out of the ad. But in reality this is brilliant. Consumers would rather sit through ads, or have pop-up ads always appearing on their screen to allow them to have free apps. When if they actually just purchased the app they not have to watch these ads.

It is unfair to have children exposed to this kind of advertising, but in all fairness it works. Consumers do watch the videos and can recal at a later date the ad.

  8. I like what you said about the possibility of marketers advertising to you and your location. However, I do not think it is such a smart thing.. Consumers are becoming more and more cautious about security as well as more skeptical. If markets can advertise to consumers based on where they are because of their mobile phones, I think consumers will feel violated and unsecure/safe.
Overall great post and well written!

  9. As the technology with mobile phones increases there are new ways to advertise. Currently some retail stores are being hooked up to make sales via cell phone banking. This is something that I believe will be the only way consumers pay for products in the near future. This will create a huge increase in advertising for company's willing to set up their stores for the online banking payment setup. Starbucks has already started this and set the benchmark for making purchases using your phone. Ads will pop up and there will most likely be an ad that showcases who around you currently will have this available in their retail store.

    1. While I agree with you I have to say that this is a crazy world with crazy people in it. This would increase convenience, but I believe it could cause some security issues. With all these scary hackers now days who knows what people are capable of. People will always find exploits and fraudulent means to get things for free.

Imagine, walk into a store, place a barcode sticker over an existing barcode, and when you scan it, all your information gets sent to some hacker behind a computer screen with a mask on. Scary thought...

    2. Wow Alex! I didn't know that happened. That is really scary.. And could be a huge potential risk for retailers.. We know these things do not occur often but it is a potential huge risk for the retailer if a hacker was to come and place a barcode sticker over an existing barcode and act as if nothing happened...

This would definetly cause security issues.. Hackers will find away.. i know chances that "you" will be targeted are probably not that great, but you still don't want to be at risk.

  13. Now a days everyone has a cell phone with them, and it is a bright opportunity for the marketers in the coming years to advertise and market their products through mobile marketing. Using cell phone rather than a laptop or a computer is more convenient and time saving, even for me sometime I use my cellphone for purchasing movie tickets and i even redeem offers provided to me by my network provider through SMS. For sure in the coming years, mobile marketing will be successful tool for many businesses.

  14. Mr. Robertson, excellent post! Almost everyone has and uses a cell phone with them today. Marketers have so much opportunity with this due to the fact that people are spending more time on their phone than on their laptop or a computer. It's much more convenient and they can take it with them everywhere. When killing 5 minutes of their day they can look on their phone rather than getting their laptop out, they will not hesitate to look at their mobile because it's so convenient for them.

  16. Productivity

This improve in efficiency means that marketers or promoters will be compelled to put higher concentrate on focusing on their information, with regards to both relevance and moment, than they have in the past. Indeed, that one particular area for concentrate is the title of the email which will experience increasing difficulties when trying to vie for the recipient's attention and time.
